What it is

typed-openrouter is the bring-your-own-key tier of typed. You pick a model, set your own API key, and the CLI sends turns directly to your own model account. The requests never pass through a Yaw Labs server, and Yaw Labs never holds your key.

It runs from the typed CLI only, and it gives you the full harness - tools, sessions, subagents, skills and MCP - on whatever model you choose.

Why people run it

Any model

Pick the model that fits the job - a frontier model for hard work, a cheap one for the routine.

Your account, your terms

Usage bills your own model account. Your account's own settings decide data retention and training.

No typed key

Nothing of Yaw Labs' sits between you and the model. Your key stays on your machine, mode 0600.

One supporter license

A single optional $10/month license covers typed and Yaw Terminal both.

Set it up

Install typed, then point it at your key. The key can live in the CLI or in a file on your machine:

From the CLI
typed byok key # store your model API key (kept mode 0600)
typed use typed-openrouter:<slug> # pick the model you want to run

Your key is read from TYPED_BYOK_API_KEY or the file ~/.config/typed/byok-key. It is never sent to Yaw Labs, and the tier only ever dials your own model account with it.

The supporter license

The optional $10/month or $100/year supporter license is a thank-you for the work, not a gate. It is the same license that covers Yaw Terminal - one purchase, both products, no second subscription. You can manage or recover it any time from the license page.

What it is not

Want everything on your own hardware instead, with no key at all? Use typed-local - free.
