Two ways to run

Same agent, same tools, different engine. Pick the one that fits the job - or switch between them mid-session.

typed-local

Free - runs on your hardware
  • Your own model server, your own machine
  • Private by construction - prompts never leave the box
  • No API key, no account, no bill
  • Bounded by your speed and memory (32 GB RAM, for the bundled preset)

typed-openrouter

Bring your own key - any model
  • Turns go straight to your own model account, with your key
  • Frontier quality, model of your choice
  • No typed account - set your key from the CLI
  • Optional $10/month supporter license, a thank-you not a gate

The whole agent, either way

Neither tier is a cut-down version. Both give you the full harness - the part that makes typed a coding agent rather than a chat box.

Install

macOS / Linux / WSL
curl -fsSL https://app.typed.cloud/install.sh | bash
Windows (PowerShell)
irm https://app.typed.cloud/install.ps1 | iex

Then run typed in any project. With no key on the machine it lands on the free typed-local tier; set a key and it can run typed-openrouter.

Common questions

Is typed free?

typed-local is free - you supply the compute, so there is no bill to pass on. typed-openrouter bills your own model account on your own key; the optional $10/month supporter license is a thank-you, not a gate.

What is the difference between the two?

typed-local runs a model on your own hardware: private by construction, no key, no account, bounded by your machine. typed-openrouter sends turns to a model you pick on your own API account: any model, frontier quality, but the requests leave your machine and your account is billed for them.

Do I need an account?

No. typed-local needs no account and no key. typed-openrouter needs your own model API key, which you set from the CLI. There is no typed account to create.
