The other big thing this week was GPT-5.6 Sol going to everyone on Jul 8-9, after a two-week government-only window for "a small group of trusted partners" at the U.S. government's request. Terra and Luna widened access the same day. Anthropic published a long oral history of Claude Code on Jul 7; the bullet in the broader week below covers the details. The thing Boris Cherny keeps coming back to is that the model didn't need to get smarter, it needed a terminal that could see a filesystem. He calls it "Product Overhang." It's a useful phrase because it explains why the harness keeps getting more important than the model.

Boris Cherny built the first version in his first week on the Labs team in September 2024 - no filesystem, no bash, just an Anthropic API call from the terminal.
